AIRPORTS

While Florence has a small airport, it is often more cost-effective to fly directly into Rome or Milan and take a high-speed train to Florence, rather than booking a connecting flight. Below are details on each airport and how to reach Florence from there.

Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO)
Rome’s main international airport offers many direct flight options at competitive rates.

Getting to Florence:

- Take the Leonardo Express train from Fiumicino Airport to Roma Termini station (approx. 32 min)

- From Roma Termini, board a high-speed train to Firenze Santa Maria Novella station (approx. 1 hr 40 min)

- Train providers: Trenitalia or Italo
Note:  High-speed train tickets should be purchased in advance. Look for Firenze S. M. Novella as your destination.

Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP)Malpensa is Milan’s largest airport and another great hub for international direct flights.

Getting to Florence:

- Take the Malpensa Express train to Milano Centrale station (approx. 1 hr)

- From Milano Centrale, take a high-speed train to Firenze Santa Maria Novella (approx. 1 hr 55 min)

- Train providers: Trenitalia or Italo
Note: Purchase your train tickets in advance. Florence’s main station is listed as Firenze S. M. Novella.

Florence Airport (FLR)Florence’s airport is small but conveniently located close to the city center. While some connecting flights are available, they are typically more expensive.

Getting to Florence:

- Take a tram, taxi, or private transfer to/from your accommodations. (15-20 min)

PASSPORTS & DOCUMENTS

Passport & Entry Requirements
To travel to Italy, all guests will need a valid passport. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure from Italy, though 6 months validity is strongly recommended.

- If you need to apply for or renew a passport, we encourage you to start early, as processing times can take up to 6 months in the U.S.

- For the most up-to-date information, visit the official website of the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs.

Upcoming Travel Requirement: ETIAS (Starting Late 2026)
Beginning in late 2026, U.S. citizens will be required to obtain an ETIAS travel authorization (similar to a visa waiver) to enter Italy and other EU countries.

- This process will involve completing an online form with your passport and personal details. While the official application is not yet live, we will update this page as more information becomes available.

- You can follow updates directly at the official ETIAS website.
